It's an old story that recently has become the talk of the town. Disaster recovery planning, traditionally loathed as another form of business insurance, is showing up as a top business priority this year.
The impetus comes from the events of Sept. 11.
"After 9-11, as I was talking with colleagues, everyone was nervous and concerned about their own plans for disaster recovery," said Greg Valdez, chief information officer at Veritas Software Corp. "It's moved from being an insurance plan to a top business priority."
Veritas, which makes software for managing data, has been holding seminars on disaster recovery to large crowds. That was evident at a recent seminar in Los Angeles, in a room that seated 500.
Business owners rate disaster recovery as their third most important priority this year, according to a recent poll by Merrill Lynch. Security came No. 1, followed by plans to improve business efficiency.
"Disaster recovery has moved up by orders of magnitude," said Valdez.
