Dow Chemical lost 1 cent in Q4
Analysts expected the chemical firm to earn a nickel, ex-items. Dow Chemical earned 36 cents a share a year ago. Sales fell 12% to $6.3 bil due to weak demand and lower operating rates. Dow warned it may have a Q1 loss and a tough '02. Responding to investor worries, Dow said it had $230 mil in asbestos liabilities in '01 but insurance covered $220 mil. Dow rose 4% to 29.54.
COSMETICS
Cosmetics down on weak results
Elizabeth Arden fell 28% to 10.06 after warning Q4 sales would miss views. It does not see a 1st-half improvement. It'll cut 10% of its U.S. staff. Estee Lauder lost 4% to 32.30 after Q2 profit fell 30% to 35 cents, in line with views. Sales fell 3%.
