Stocks eased on lighter volume for a second straight day Tuesday. The Dow industrial average fell 0.5%, and the S&P 500 lost 0.4%.

Energy stocks continued to plunge. Massey Energy gapped down 4.22, or 19%, to 18 on eight times its usual volume. The stock surrendered nearly three weeks' worth of gains.

The fifth-largest U.S. coal miner said its loss for the last two months of 2001 would be about 30 cents to 37 cents, wider than expected. The Richmond, Va.-based firm also lowered its 2002 production forecast.

Consol Energy, which mines for coal and methane gas, dipped 0.78 to 24.74 on triple average volume.
