Airport Security: Remember how a new breed of airport screeners was on the way because they all would be federal employees? Think again.

You recall the arguments. House Republicans and the White House wanted to give the administration the option of making airport screeners federal workers. The Senate preferred they join the federal work force. "To professionalize, you must federalize," intoned Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D. So in this logic, federal workers equals professional workers equals safer skies. The Senate view prevailed and all airport screeners must be federal workers by Nov. 19 (with their union cards, no doubt).

Now it seems that in order to meet that deadline, the government wants to hire many of the existing screeners -- and is willing to waive a few basic requirements to do so.

For instance, a high school diploma would be nice, but a year's work experience showing the "ability to perform the work of the position" is ...
