Placebo aids depression in study
Patients helped by placebos had a change in brain function just as those taking drugs, a UCLA study showed. Overall, 52% of those getting anti-depressants responded vs. 38% of those taking placebos. The placebo response -- when patients get better from a sham treatment -- could lead to better drugs.
62 mil in U.S. have heart disease
Some 1 mil people die from heart disease a year; a third of those could be prevented if people ate better and exercised more, the American Heart Association said. Blood pressure drugs also help. In '99, 85% of heart attack survivors were prescribed beta blockers vs. 62% in '96.
