Retailers end Dec. on high note
Federated Department Stores, parent of Macy's and Bloomingdale's, still sees Dec. same-store sales off 9%-9.5% from a year ago. Federated had forecast an 11%-14% drop. It credited strong last-minute and post-Christmas sales in the week ended Dec. 29. Wal-Mart also said last week's same-store sales were above expectations. It still sees Dec. comps rising at the high end of its 4%-6% range.
Kmart's same-store sales did well in the Dec. 29 week. But it still forecast a 0%-2% gain.
