By any common measure, 2001 was an awful year.
It started with the aftermath of a botched presidential election. By midyear, the economy's slowdown had become a recession.
Then there was that date: Sept. 11. A date that, like an earlier one to which it has been likened, will truly live in infamy. The terror attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon that day claimed thousands of lives -- and changed the U.S. forever.
