At its debut in April 1996, Yahoo had yet to turn a profit. But soon enough, the firm became one of the two leading profitable Internet firms.

As founders David Filo and Jerry Yang became fixtures in financial publications and the news circuit, investors began catching on.

On Sept. 22, 1998, the stock broke out of an 11-week base on heavy trade 1. It wasn't a typical cup-with-handle base, but it had solid fundamental and technical traits.

Prior to its base, Yahoo had a strong uptrend. It's just what you want to see. From June 1998 to its July 1998 peak, the stock gained 74%.
