Enron slashes jobs after Chap. 11
The ailing energy trader will ax 4,000 jobs, or 19% of staff, mostly from its main offices in Houston. On Friday it cut 1,100 jobs in London. Enron filed for bankruptcy Sunday and sued Dynegy for $10 bil for canceling their merger. Dynegy countersued and will fight to buy Enron's crown-jewel, 16,500-mile pipeline. An Enron bankruptcy would be the biggest in U.S. history.
Enron got $1.5 bil in much-needed financing from Citigroup and J.P. Morgan, backed by its assets. Enron also expects a joint venture for its trading ops within weeks.
Valero, UDS ink decree with FTC
They'll sell a San Francisco-area refinery and 70 gas stations to win approval for their $6 bil merger. Valero Energy and Ultramar Diamond have three refineries in Calif. They'll sell Ultramar's Golden Eagle plant. It may fetch $1 bil due to its prime location, analysts said.
Tesoro may bid for the Golden Eagle refinery.
