ExciteAtHome cleared to pull plug

A U.S. bankruptcy judge cleared the way for the high-speed Net service provider to turn off its service at midnight PST. AtHome will meet with cable partners to try to rework deals and prevent service interruption for its 4 mil users. The ruling is a victory for AtHome bondholders. They contested a $307 mil buyout offer by AtHome's controlling stakeholder AT&T, saying it's too low.

BUILDING

Home builders up on analyst talk

Salomon Smith Barney upgraded D.R. Horton, Lennar, Centex, Toll Bros. and Pulte Homes, citing their "unprecedented resilience" during the recession. Though home builders might seem vulnerable to higher mortgage rates, Salomon noted they rallied in the late '80s while the Fed raised rates. IBD's Building-Residential/Commercial group rose 5.1%, the day's best performer.
