It's always true that good people are crucial to a company's success.

But how do you know everyone's doing his or her job right, from top execs down to the rank and file?

The answer is to make them deliver on clear, measurable goals.

"We want everybody to know what to expect, and that what we expect is measurable," said Gary Geisel, president of Provident Bank in Baltimore.

The use of measured performance based on specific goals helps create a climate where results are clearly expected, he adds.

"It makes you sit down and say "define it' -- to take management practices and identify them in a definable way," Geisel said.
