Byline: CLAIRE MENCKE
For Jules Verne, success flowed from a dream and a blueprint.
From his childhood, Verne (1828-1905) dreamed of being a writer. His practical family guided him into law school. But while in school, Verne began to write.
He loved writing, and vowed to find a way to pursue it.
He decided to stay in Paris once he graduated, better to learn from the great writers there at the time. He sought out dramatist Alexandre Dumas as his mentor.
But Verne also wanted to have a life. He married and became a stockbroker. The profession let him support his family and find time to write at night.
His first novel, "Martin Paz," was a historical romance set in Peru. It won good reviews, but didn't make him any money.
