"Smart bomb' drugs promising

AstraZeneca's tablet Iressa and ImClone's injectable drug C225 are the first in a new class of drugs that aim to knock out cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue. In trials, Iressa shrank lung tumors by half in 19% of patients while 24% responded to ImClone's drug. Both should hit the market next year and are being toted as $1 bil-a-year drugs.

Melanoma vaccine effective, safe

The vaccine is different from others because it's tailor-made to a patient's tumor, Italian scientists said. In trials, Oncophage stimulated cellular immunity, which is required to destroy cancerous cells.
