Verizon Wireless fills in network
The top wireless operator will buy Dobson Communications' wireless ops in four states for $465 mil. Besides expanding coverage, it'll cut the fees Verizon pays to transmit calls via rival networks. The Dobson properties in Calif., Ga., Ohio and Tenn. cover 950,000 potential customers. Verizon Wireless is a Verizon-Vodafone joint venture.
Alltel Q3 net up 10%, beat views
The rural telecom earned 74 cents a share, a penny above targets. Sales grew 2% to $1.9 bil as wireless sales rose 4%. Alltel added 124,000 wireless customers, a bit above views. It sees Q4 results flat with Q3. Also, Alltel's $5.9 bil unsolicited bid for CenturyTel remains on the table, even though its rival rejected it. Alltel said Wednesday it'll buy 600,000 Ky. lines from Verizon for $1.9 bil.
