Investors lifted techs Wednesday. The Nasdaq composite gapped up 27.86 points to start the day. It added 1.4% on heavier volume.
Movie Gallery cleared a four-week consolidation, rising 3 to 27.55 as trade doubled. The video rental retailer is at its highest point since Sept. 1995. Last week its third-quarter profit rose 400% to 15 cents a share, 3 cents over views.
American Healthways added 3.12 to 40.58 on nearly five times its usual turnover. The provider of disease-management services is 5% below its July 2 high. The stock was featured in Tuesday's Chart Watch.
Penn National Gaming gained 1.28 to 20.48 as volume doubled. Last week the gaming firm reported third-quarter profit rose 23% to 48 cents a share, a penny short of views. The stock is working on the right side of a 16-week base, sitting 26% off its high.
