Politics: A man sits in prison for making illegal campaign donations. The senator who accepted his gifts keeps his job. This is the story of Bob in Wonderland.
David Chang, a former friend of Sen. Robert Torricelli, is serving 18 months in prison for making $53,700 in illegal donations to his 1996 campaign. Chang also says he gave the New Jersey Democrat gifts to win his help in business deals.
The Senate Ethics Committee "severely admonished" Torricelli for violating Senate rules by accepting a big-screen TV, a CD player and pricey earrings for his sister. The senator also apparently took a loan and two bronze statues from Chang to decorate his office.
In exchange, Chang said Torricelli helped him with North Korean and South Korean business deals. The ethics panel determined the senator and his staff did indeed contact U.S. officials and wrote letters to foreign governments on Chang's behalf, and let him or his representatives attend meetings with foreign officials.
Does anyone wonder why the man who apparently accepted a bribe -- actually demanded it, according to Chang -- is punished less harshly than the man who delivered it?
