Aetna reverses loss with Q2 profit
The No. 3 U.S. HMO earned 32 cents a share, beating views by 7 cents. Last year it lost 67 cents. Results were helped by cost-cutting. But sales fell 23% to $5.1 bil as it continued to drop unprofitable plans. Aetna expects to earn $1.70-$1.75 for 2002. Analysts expected $1.33.
Oxford Health Plan's Q2 profit of 58 cents, with a 17-cent charge, fell 21%. Views were for 70 cents. Revenue rose 10% to $1.22 bil.
AdvancePCS, rivals fall on report
The pharmacy benefits manager fell 14% to 19.36, a 52-week low, after published reports said AdvancePCS is resisting Justice Dept. efforts to read internal e-mail or interview workers. AdvancePCS is in the middle of a federal probe into rebates it got from drug makers. It said it's fighting a "baseless" industry probe. Express Scripts lost 5% and Caremark 3% on the news.
