An American First
In response to "Just How Tolerant Is Islam?" (National Issue, July 25) and recent letters, I would like to say the following:
Islam is not tolerant, intolerant, peaceful or violent. People are. Please do not judge by religion, only by actions. Islam is a religion. Religions don't persecute and destroy. People do. There are Muslims who kill and maim innocent people, and spread fear, hatred and destruction. There are other Muslims who do not. I am one of them.
I was born in Baghdad in 1973. Except for an unfortunate six years in Saudi Arabia, I have spent all my life in the U.S. I am an American. I love America. I love Americans. I will fight to preserve my freedom, even against other Muslims who would take it from me. I will not kill in the name of Islam. I will not oppress or suppress in the name of Islam. I will not persecute or punish in the name of Islam. I will not defend Islam, for Islam is just an idea. I will defend myself, for I am a man. I do not hate Jews. I do not hate Christians. I do not hate women. I think for myself. I make my own decisions. I live my own life. I let others live theirs.
I am a Muslim.
