First gene-altered vaccine tests

Britain OK'd the first human trial of a vaccine containing a genetically modified bacterium. Acambis PLC developed prototype vaccines as part of an effort to produce a multicomponent treatment to prevent traveler's diarrhea. The vaccines are in early-stage tests in the U.S.

Need for math, science teachers

The National Research Council urged lawmakers to develop a fellowship program for grades K-12, taking advantage of the glut of math and science professionals who can't find jobs or haven't pursued a career in academia or industry.
