Unilever beats views, ups targets

The Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant earned $1.06 bil in Q2, up 21% vs. a year ago. Sales were basically flat at $12.5 bil. But sales of its top 400 brands -- including Hellman's mayonnaise, Lipton tea and Ben and Jerry's ice cream -- rose 4.4% vs. 3.3% growth in Q1. Unilever sees '02 profit growth in the midteens vs. its old forecast for low double-digit growth. Unilever rose 5%.

Brewer stocks up on strong sales

Anheuser-Busch had 7.5% volume growth in the four weeks ended July 13, a J.P. Morgan analyst said. Adolph Coors' volume rose 1.7%, though it was driven by lower prices. Coors raised its Q2 operating cash flow goal by 21% to $182 mil. Anheuser-Busch rose 6%. Coors gained 4%.
