NYSE stocks couldn't stop the bleeding Monday, giving more ground in another gloomy session. The Dow fell 1.4%, the S&P 500 2.1%. The S&P 600 small-cap index, a pocket of market resilience in recent months, fell an even steeper 2.5%. NYSE volume slipped compared with Friday's massive level.
Weight Watchers International slimmed down 1.14 to 42.30 on 2 1/2 times its normal trade. The weight control program provider has traded in a tight range of between 40 and 45 in the last seven weeks. A total of 90 mutual funds owned 6.6 million shares as of last quarter. The stock debuted at 24 a share in November.
Chico's FAS tumbled 2.01 to 34.31 as volume swelled more than twofold. The women's apparel maker sliced its 50-day moving average last week.
Fellow retailer Jo-Ann Stores gave up 1.37 to 27.83 on volume 73% above its 50-day average. Despite the loss, the nation's largest fabrics retailer has nearly quadrupled this year.
Electronic Data Systems plunged 6.70, or 18%, to 30.45 on 4 1/2 times its normal trade to hit lows not seen since 1998. The computer services company's shares have lost 35% in four days.
