Talk about shopping sprees.
Since August 2000, Universal Health Services Inc. has made 23 acquisitions that added a combined $435 million in annual revenue at the time of purchase.
Normally, 23 acquisitions in less than two years would raise eyebrows.
But it's par for the course in the rapidly consolidating field of for-profit hospitals. To gain muscle, you have to go shopping.
Universal owns 26 U.S. acute care hospitals and 38 behavioral health centers in the U.S. and nine hospitals in France.
The company is still on the prowl for more properties, but it's slowing down the pace.
