RealNetworks Inc. is searching for a winning game plan.
On Monday, the audio and video software company launched its first online game subscription service to help boost sagging revenue.
The move is another attempt by Real to diversify its business. The company makes software for companies that want to distribute audio and video on the Web. But late last month, Real lowered its estimates for the second quarter because of the soft market for software services.
Real also manages one of the most successful online subscription services that provide news and entertainment to consumers. The service has 700,000 subscribers vs. 300,000 a year ago.
But expecting the same kind of success with online games is a crapshoot, says Phil Leigh, analyst at investment bank Raymond James & Associates.
"This is an incremental step, but it's not a major development," he said.
