Independence Day, FBI Style
The FBI will be hauling out its best anti-terror tech to deal with possible attacks during the Fourth of July holiday, law enforcement sources say.
The technology includes advanced facial recognition and other biometric devices. FBI agents in big cities also are expected to have high-tech "sniffers" on hand that can detect chemical, germ or nuclear agents in the air, sources say.
The steps are a response to government warnings about possible attacks at shopping malls, subways and nuclear power plants during Thursday's celebrations nationwide.
The FBI, which oversees the national fingerprint archives, is a big backer of using other types of biometrics to ID terror suspects. The agency already uses biometric scans that ID individuals based on facial features such as the distance between a person's eyes and nose. Taking iris or retina scans is another approach.
Some of the FBI's biometric devices can "grab" faces from a crowd and compare them with photos of known terrorists.
