Drug makers sue to block plan
The drug industry sued to block a Michigan program that urges doctors to prescribe medicines on only a preferred drug list, an industry group said. PHRMA said the program restricts patients from access to better drugs. Last week the Supreme Court temporarily blocked Maine's efforts to press for Medicaid drug discounts.
Medicare rules put Dianon in ER
Dianon tumbled 17.09, or 32%, to 36.33, a 52-week low. It fell 11% Friday. The provider of cancer and genomic diagnostic services said Medicare reimbursement changes could hurt '03 profit by 10%. Analysts said the hit could be as much as 20%. The proposed new rules are set to take effect in Jan. AmeriPath fell 6% on the same concerns.
AIDS group sues U.K.'s Glaxo
The AIDS Healthcare Foundation says GlaxoSmithKline overcharged for its top-selling antiviral drugs AZT, 3TC and Ziagen. The group said the prices charged exceed its cost of licensing, making and distributing the drugs. Big drug makers last year cut prices on AIDS drugs to poor nations. Now patients in rich nations want equal treatment.
