Listen.com Inc. is set to become the best-stocked online music store.
On Monday, the company says, it will start selling music in digital form over the Web from Vivendi Universal's Universal Music Group.
By adding Universal, Listen will become the first online music subscription service to sell music from all five of the world's largest record companies.
Listen already has deals to sell music from Sony Corp., EMI PLC, Bertelsmann AG's BMG and AOL Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. Records.
Lining up all five producers is a plus, but none of the online music services will gain mainstream consumer acceptance until it's easier for people to get the music and play it wherever and whenever they like, says T.S. Kelly, an analyst for market tracker Nielsen/NetRatings Inc.
Total freedom of use "is the next major development in online music," he said.
