Byline: KATHARINE STALTER
A soldier arrives at the scene of an accident: A child has been hit by a military Humvee.
"My son needs help," says the child's mother.
"How many people are hurt?" asks the soldier.
"The boy and one of the drivers," answers another soldier, who's already on-site.
The arriving soldier is real. But the people with whom he's interacting are virtual characters on a wall-sized screen. These characters, powered by artificial intelligence, give specific answers to the questions.
Is this some computerized version of paintball or laser tag? Not quite. The game, which has the no-nonsense name "Mission Rehearsal Exercise," isn't sold in stores. It's a training tool for the Army.
