The Nasdaq rebounded from a 3.1% sell-off at the open to end up 0.4% on heavier turnover Wednesday.

WorldCom's admission of false earnings over the past five quarters and Adelphia Communications' filing for bankruptcy protection helped send cable and satellite stocks plunging. EchoStar Communications gapped down 1.76 to 16.99, hitting a nearly three-year low on double average trade. Comcast's special shares fell 1.47 to 22.77 on heavy volume. The stock has failed to get above its 50-day moving average since January.

On the upside, a few retailers rebounded from recent setbacks. Sonic surged 1.53 to 31.56 as volume tripled …
