NYSE stocks followed up on Friday's rally Monday, gaining ground on light volume. The Dow climbed 2.3%, the S&P 500 2.9%.

Wendy's International vaulted 1.96 to notch a new high of 40.85 on nearly triple average trading. It's been in a strong uptrend this year.

The No. 3 hamburger chain said its same-store sales rose a preliminary 7.1% in May. It attributed the gain in May sales to new menu items such as Garden Sensations salads.
