Gaming firms fall on Ill. tax hike
Illinois' legislature raised the peak rate on riverboat casino operators to 50% on revenue over $100 mil, up from 35%. Gov. George Ryan is expected to sign it. The hikes, which would start in 2nd half '02, are expected to have big impacts on gaming firms with heavy Illinois exposure. Argosy Gaming dived 20%, Hollywood Casino 19%, Harrah's 8%, Mandalay Bay 6% and Boyd Gaming 14%. IBD's gaming group fell 5.9%, one of the day's worst.
Wyndham hotels: free phone, Net
Wyndham will no longer give frequent-stay points toward future visits to its ByRequest recognition program members. It'll now offer free local and long-distance phone calls as well as free Net access, copying and faxes. Hotels typically charge big fees for using room phones and other services. Wyndham hopes perks now will reward loyalty.
