Restaurant operator Panera Bread Co. (New America, Feb. 4) is accelerating its expansion plans and lifting its 2002 earnings estimates after reporting strong first-quarter financials.

The firm operates and franchises 390 bakery-cafes under the names Panera Bread and Saint Louis Bread Co.

On May 30 it announced that first-quarter earnings rose 67% from a year ago to 35 cents a share, beating consensus analyst views by 3 cents. Sales for the quarter gained 45% to $77 million.

Looking ahead, Panera pegged full-year earnings at $1.40, up from its March guidance ...
