Harlan, Iowa, has 5,282 residents, two traffic lights, millions of bushels of corn and . . . three broadband Internet service providers.
It also has three phone companies and two cable providers.
"We say we're the community with the nation's best tech infrastructure, with the possible exceptions of Silicon Valley and the Washington, D.C., corridor," said Larry Flanagan. He's director of marketing and economic development for DevelopSource, Shelby County's economic development department.
How can the residents of Harlan, the Shelby County seat, have all these services?
Seven years ago, the local utility district decided to jump-start the digital age. Using proceeds from the sale of gas, electricity and water services to county residents for years, it spent $3.8 million to build its own digital infrastructure. The work included installing more than nine miles of fiber in Harlan to all houses and businesses, and a total of 250 miles throughout the county.
