Byline: SARAH Z. SLEEPER
A fiery explosion blew Rocky Deschamps' cabin to bits and almost took his life.
Deschamps, his father-in-law, Ivan, and Ivan's great-grandson Tyler snowmobiled up to a remote Idaho site. Inside, Deschamps struck a match to light a heater. Without warning, an undetected propane leak blew the structure into a fireball of falling debris.
"It blew stuff for a hundred yards," said Deschamps. All three men were trapped under collapsed beams, with grave wounds and burns.
Staying calm, the injured Deschamps wrestled free, got aid from a neighbor and used a cell phone to call for help.
The call, in March 2001, summoned an emergency helicopter, and the three survived. It also won Deschamps an award as a "Wireless Samaritan" from the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association. Each year CTIA recognizes heroes who use their cell phones to save lives, reduce crime and promote safety.
