NYSE stocks started the day underwater before popping above the surface for decent gains Wednesday. The Dow climbed 1.1%, the S&P 500 0.9%. Volume closed lower than Tuesday's level.
United Auto Group gapped out of its base, zooming 1.83 to 26.75 on four times normal trade. The auto dealership chain operator posted first-quarter earnings of 40 cents a share, beating First Call's consensus estimate by a nickel. The stock was featured in Wednesday's NYSE Stocks In The News and appears there again today.
Fellow auto dealership chain Sonic Automotive fell 2.40 to 36.05 on close to six times its regular volume. The firm posted first-quarter earnings of 53 cents a share, a 61% year-over-year increase. Sales rose 10% to $1.6 billion.
Blockbuster rose 1.40 to 30 as volume quadrupled. The movie rental chain shrugged off a downgrade from Gerard Klauer Mattison to neutral from outperform.
