Cisco buys two firms for $258 mil
Cisco will buy Hammerhead Networks for $173 mil in stock and Navarro Networks for $85 mil in stock. Hammerhead makes software that helps carry billing and security services. Navarro makes Ethernet switching chips. Cisco will take a 2-cent charge, writing off $145 mil right away. It's the first buys in a while for the once-acquisitive Cisco.
Oracle falls as Lehman cuts views
The business software firm slid 6%, falling intraday to its lowest since Sept. '99. Lehman Bros. expects Oracle's Q4 EPS to fall 27% to 11 cents as sales slip 21% to $2.57 bil in sales. The consensus view is 13 cents. Lehman cited price pressures, continued employee departures and a tough market environment.
Professor takes Microsoft's side
MIT professor Stuart Madnick testified he doubts a modular Windows could be made that would let computer firms remove certain features, as nine states have proposed.
