Profit Motive Required
"They Hate Us" (Letters, March 26) by Mitchell Cooper was interesting and compels a reply, even though IBD does so every week, in advance. I ask him: If a president weakens defense and intelligence to a ho-hum nap time when the enemies are in our midst, what does he expect? Peace forever?
The Kyoto Protocol is indeed trendy politics. When the dirtiest countries are exempted and the cleanest bled, something's wrong.
The "minuscule" 5% addition of oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would add to the minuscule amounts from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Texas and the Gulf of Mexico. Before long, there is a lot.
I'm glad Mr. Cooper likes American ingenuity, because we have developed an energy resource needed to reduce the use of oil imports.
The newer designs of nuclear plants, if only the government and the NIMBYs would get over their fears, could replace most of the fossil fuel plants in this country by mid-century.
Finally, the profit motive is a requirement to achieve further advances in health and all endeavors.
