Middle East: As the West Bank war escalates, calls for more U.S. involvement do too. But that's pointless as long as Palestinian terrorists hold power.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., is leading the charge for more U.S. involvement. Since envoy Anthony Zinni's peace mission has imploded, Lieberman thinks it's time to send in Secretary of State Colin Powell.
With all due respect to Lieberman -- who usually views the world as it is -- what does he expect Powell to be able to do?
Yes, the secretary is well-regarded throughout the world. But he would be met with the same double-talk from the Palestinians that Zinni, former U.S. envoy Dennis Ross, even President Clinton faced.
First, express undying commitment to the peace process. Then, send out teen-agers and women with bombs strapped to their chests to kill innocent Israelis.
For decades, the world has been taken in by this double game. Indeed, the outraged European Union is still taking Yasser Arafat's side.
President Bush, to his credit, has been backing Israel's actions. Or, at least, not indulging in the knee-jerk condemnations so favored by the "international community."
