Most people in the U.S. use their cell phone for one task only: phone calls. For Jamdat Mobile Inc. and others, that's a challenge -- and an opportunity.
Privately held Jamdat and a host of rivals have emerged in the fledgling field of making games for cell phones.
Several factors make Jamdat a standout. One is its flagship game, "Gladiator." The Russell Crowe of wireless game makers claims 1.1 million players for "Gladiator." Though no figures track cell phone game usage, analysts agree that "Gladiator" is one of the most played such games in the U.S.
The company plans to release soon cell phone versions of World Cup soccer and Hasbro Inc.'s Scrabble and Yahtzee games.
Jamdat and its chief executive, Harvard-educated lawyer turned game guru Mitch Lasky, have secured big-name investors. The 2-year-old company's $12 million in funding is from the likes of Sun Microsystems Inc., Qualcomm Inc. and Intel Corp.
