Hyperactive In Wireless
Where do pop icons of the 1980s go when their heydays are past? Into the wireless business.
At least that's the case with Thomas Dolby Robertson, founder of Beatnik Inc. Beatnik is a 6-year-old San Mateo, Calif., company that sells ring-tone software to cell phone makers.
The company has deals with Nokia Corp., for example, to enable so-called "polyphonic" sounds, or ring tones with multiple melody lines. Analysts say wireless ring tones are a hot new niche.
But Thomas Dolby, as he's known, already knows a thing or two about being hot. He has five Grammy nominations and a group of fans that know him as the artist behind tunes "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive."
Dolby attended last month's Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association trade show in Orlando, Fla. And he's still making music. He just released a CD titled "Forty," his first record since 1993. E-Mail In Afghanistan
