Microsoft Corp. is heading offshore -- on four wheels.
MSN Carpoint, a Web company mostly owned by Microsoft, was to announce an international expansion Monday. It's bringing its online auto information and referral service to 14 countries.
The move would put Carpoint's service in 19 countries in total. It also widens Carpoint's offshore lead over rival services of Autobytel Inc. and AOL Time Warner Inc.
Carpoint needs to be global to serve the needs of all car shoppers, says Chief Executive Ryan Hamlin.
"It's a combination of consumer demand and a responsibility to our shareholders," he said. "This is a global business, and it's a business that we should be in."
