Oracle Corp. is moving into high gear to market its latest database technology and overcome a host of problems.
Its biggest problems? Sales are falling and rivals IBM Corp. and Microsoft Corp. are gaining database market share. Its more immediate problems? Customers are angry over what some call a new company pricing strategy, and rival SAP AG contends that some Oracle ads gave incorrect product comparison information.
But the world's second-biggest software company behind Microsoft is addressing the two latest situations while focusing on the bigger picture. It says it can regain the momentum in database software with a product it calls real application clusters, or RAC.
"Most Important Thing Ever'
While RAC has been on the market since June, it's a new product in the database world, where big changes are made slowly. There's nothing slow, though, about Oracle's take on RAC.
"I think RAC is the most important thing ever in our history," Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison said at the company's yearly developer's conference in December.
