NYSE stocks ended a seesaw session with mild gains Monday as Wal-Mart's same-store sales outlook rallied retailers. The Dow rose 0.4%, the S&P 500 0.5%. Volume spiked up from Friday but remained about 25% below average as holiday sluggishness continued and geopolitical tensions worried investors .

Trex Co. reversed to close up 0.66 at 35.65, well above its 50-day moving average. Wire services said insider selling has been heavy lately.

The Virginia-based maker of composite lumber tumbled 7.2% Friday after gaining 29% from its pivot point in just over a month. Monday's 1.9% bounce left the stock 18% above its pivot. More than …
