Immigrants land half of new jobs
Half of the 16 mil new U.S. wage earners in the past decade were recent immigrants, up from 27% in the 1980s, said a study by Northeastern University's Center for Labor Market Studies. Among new male workers, eight of 10 were new to the U.S. Immigrants accounted for all the growth among workers under 35 due to a drop in U.S. birth rates in the '70s and the resulting dip in that age group. Still, 86% of the work force is American-born.
** Over one-third of new immigrant workers held blue-collar jobs. But nearly one in four held a technical, managerial or professional job.
** U.S. Sept. job openings were 3.374 mil vs. 3.652 a year earlier.
