Santa Claus is giving online retailers a reason to crow again.

E-tailers are reporting record traffic and sales in the early stages of what is expected to become another record Christmas shopping season on the Internet.

The Grinch of a bad economy doesn't appear to be stopping many consumers from using the Web to find gifts this yuletide shopping season.

Fourth-quarter consumer e-commerce sales are expected to rise 35% from the year-ago quarter to $16.8 billion from $12.4 billion, excluding travel and auctions, says BizRate.com. The online comparison-shopping service and research firm made that prediction early in November, and on Friday an executive confirmed that forecast.

In fact, online sales for the month through Nov. 26 rose 40% from the same period a year ago, says BizRate President Chuck Davis.

"It's looking like a very rosy holiday online," he said.
