Techs have done the heavy lifting in the latest rally, but retailers are starting to flex their muscles. Cost Plus broke out of a seven-month base Wednesday. It pulled back on lighter trade Friday, but held above its pivot point.
The operator of Cost Plus World Market home furnishings stores posted third-quarter profit of 3 cents a share, beating its forecast of a penny. It said increased sales of higher-margin furniture offset a charge from a legal settlement. But return on equity has dipped from 15.9% to 11% the last two fiscal years.
