Byline: JAMES DETAR
Microcontrollers are cheap. Billions are sold each year. These processors go into things like toys, autos and consumer appliances.
Microchip Technology Inc. is a leading maker. It's expected to have sales of $653 million this year.
The company, though, has never built a chip factory, or fab, of its own.
Microchip, though, owns four chip plants -- two in Arizona, one in Washington state and one in Oregon. And it bought all of them.
Most recently, in August it bought a former Fujitsu Ltd. plant in Gresham, Ore., for $183.5 million.
This buy-not-build strategy keeps costs down and helps Microchip stay profitable. It's made money every year since 1992. Its shares trade near 30, up from 15 in late September and near an all-time high.
