Sun Microsystems Inc. is pitching itself as the real deal in Web services.

The company is on a quest for credibility in the burgeoning new market. Web services promise to tie programs together and automate more tasks. That means computer users won't have to fuss with as many mundane key strokes.

Web services also could boost e-commerce by linking disparate computer systems.

A group led by Microsoft Corp. and IBM Corp. called the Web Services Interoperability Organization, or WS-I, is crafting standards for Web services. The problem is, Sun isn't on the group's board.
