NYSE stocks closed strong Friday as weak jobs and manufacturing data boosted rate-cut hopes, but volume lagged. The S&P 500 climbed 1.7% and the Dow industrials 1.4% on lighter trade. For the week, the S&P rose 0.4% and the Dow 0.9%, their fourth straight week of gains.
Anteon International grabbed back half of Thursday's losses despite a downgrade to buy from strong buy from BB&T Capital Markets. The government IT and engineering services provider rose 1.80, or 7.8%, to 24.80 after sliding 14% the previous day on news of its problems in getting payments from two government accounting centers.
UnitedHealth Group climbed back above its 50-day line, gaining 1.74 to 92.69. It remains 8% off its high. The Minnesota-based HMO said Walter Mondale resigned from its board effective Thursday in connection with his decision to run for the U.S. Senate.
Harman International Industries zipped 3 points to 59 to finish within 5% of its 52-week high. The audio product maker's Relative Strength line is in new high ground. Harman declared a cash dividend of 2.5 cents a share for the first quarter ended Sept. 30.
Oshkosh Truck Corp. climbed 3.37 to 60.32 for three-day gains of nearly 18%. ...
