After Comcast Corp. closes its deal to buy AT&T Corp.'s cable TV business, the merged company plans to go back to the basics.
Basic subscribers, that is.
In 2002, AT&T Broadband has lost more than 430,000 customers that pay for basic services. Most of them switched to satellite TV, analysts say.
Comcast plans to stem the loss of basic subscribers by upgrading AT&T's cable system in markets that still don't have digital video or high-speed cable modem services.
"Keeping our eye on the basic sub ball is job one," Stephen Burke, president of Comcast cable communications, told analysts in a third-quarter earnings conference call last week. "In terms of priorities, there's a sense of urgency around basic subscribers."
