DOJ sues to block Dish-DirecTV
The Justice Dept. and 23 states went to court to block EchoStar Communications' buy of Hughes Electronics and its DirecTV unit, which would create the largest U.S. pay-TV service. The DOJ said the deal would reduce pay-TV competition, despite last-ditch concessions to try to save the deal. The FCC has already voted against the merger.
Martha Stewart Q3 net fell 40%
The household media and goods firm met views with a profit of 10 cents a share. Revenue rose 4.2% to $70.9 mil. The firm will launch in Jan. a magazine, Everyday Food, the first without the namesake founder's name. Martha Stewart Living sees a 3-cent profit in Q4 vs. views for 10 due to the ongoing insider trading probe of Stewart.
Westwood One Q3 net rose 178%
The provider of radio and TV programming earned 25 cents, beating views by a penny. Revenue grew 8% to $133.8 mil as the ad climate improved. But Westwood One, near a high, fell 6% to 36.30. Wall Street may have expected better results.
